Decentralized science, or DeSci, is the attempt to improve science with Web3 technology. This episode of Founders features Philipp Koellinger, co-founder of DeSci Labs and the DeSci Foundation. Koellinger describes the many problems that currently hinder science and scientific research, from the way research is published to how much of scientific research is locked behind paywalls. Fixing these issues can speed up development of scientific research and make data more findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable.
Koellinger is a professor in economics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Early in his career, he studied entrepreneurship and innovation. Today, his team at DeSci Labs, a startup in the Protocol Labs network, is developing an innovative project called DeSci Nodes — a new way for researchers to publish their research. Not just based on PDFs, DeSci Nodes package the research manuscript, code and data into “a complete living thing that tracks the entire lifecycle of the research project. All of that will live in the open — no paywalls. Everybody can access it.
